Early Members of the Tyrannosauroidea

Assigned to the Proceratosauridae within the Tyrannosauroidea superfamily, Guanlong demonstrates that the tyrannosaurs are an ancient lineage within the Theropoda. Caldey has chosen to give the pneumatised cranial crest a striking blue colour with hints of green. The jaws too have been carefully coloured blue, but this time with patches of black. This colouration contrasts with the bold black and white stripes and bright red throat patch.

It is thought that these dinosaurs used their impressive crests in displays. Perhaps to demonstrate fitness for breeding or to ward off rivals.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur thanked Caldey for her excellent drawing and commented:

“Guanlong is known from two specimens, found in close proximity to each other. Its discovery helped palaeontologists to better understand the evolutionary changes in theropod dinosaurs leading to the Tyrannosauridae family. In addition, as the two Guanlong specimens represent individuals of different ages, scientists were able to learn more about how dinosaurs changed as they matured.”

The spokesperson praised Caldey’s illustration and added:

“The large, prominent crest may indeed have been brightly coloured and Caldey has carefully observed the Beasts of the Mesozoic model and produced a wonderful illustration.”

Amazing Tenontosaurus Gastroliths on Display

By |2024-01-02T20:32:47+00:00June 1st, 2023|Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal Drawings, Dinosaur Fans, Main Page, Photos/Pictures of Fossils|0 Comments

A return visit to the Manchester Museum permitted Everything Dinosaur team members to take a photograph of the Tenontosaurus gastroliths that form part of a new dinosaur exhibit at the Museum. The gastroliths (stomach stones) were found in the body cavity of a Tenontosaurus tilletti specimen discovered in Montana in 1994.

Tenontosaurus Gastroliths

This amazing dinosaur fossil was nicknamed “April” after the wife of Barry James who cleaned and prepared the fossils for exhibition. Gastroliths (stomach stones) were found in the body cavity of this dinosaur. Some dinosaurs swallowed stones to help them grind up tough plants and aid digestion. These stones were held in a gizzard and helped to break down plant-material and assisted in the extraction of nutrients.

Only a handful of examples of stomach stones associated with ornithopods have been recorded. “April” the Tenontosaurus is the largest ornithopod dinosaur known to science associated with gastroliths.

Illustrating The Amazing”Prehistoric Planet” Animals

By |2024-01-02T20:15:14+00:00May 27th, 2023|Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal Drawings, Dinosaur Fans, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

The second series of “Prehistoric Planet” has recently concluded, the last episode “North America” having been broadcast yesterday on Apple+TV. The programmes have proved to be immensely popular with dinosaur fans and natural history film viewers. The five episodes in the series have achieved an audience rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The programmes have also inspired lots of prehistoric animal fans to create drawings of the dinosaurs featured. For example, young artist Caldey sent in a magnificent illustration of a Qianzhousaurus concentrating intently as it hunted prey.

“Prehistoric Planet” Qianzhousaurus and Corythoraptor

In a beautifully crafted scene, a female Qianzhousaurus stalks a flock of Corythoraptors in a Late Cretaceous forest. The first hunt is unsuccessful and the Corythoraptors escape. However, with the approach of a storm, the odds turn in the favour of the hunter and this clever theropod is able to catch her quarry.

Qianzhousaurus although a Late Cretaceous tyrannosaur, was not closely related to Tyrannosaurus rex. It has been classified as a member of the Alioramini tribe of long-snouted tyrannosaurs within the Tyrannosauridae. Corythoraptor is an oviraptorid. Oviraptorids seem to have been particularly abundant in the Late Cretaceous of China.

“Prehistoric Planet” has continued to delight, entertain and inform.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“Thank you Caldey for sending in your stunning illustrations. We hope you enjoyed watching the five television programmes. We have printed out the drawings and put them on display in our office and warehouse.”

The PNSO Basilosaurus Model

This large prehistoric whale figure was one of the first PNSO replicas to be supplied complete with transparent display stands. Measuring close to twenty inches in length (more than fifty centimetres long), this figure needed a lot of shelf space. Two species of Basilosaurus are known. Basilosaurus cetoides (the type species) was named by Sir Richard Owen (1839). A second species Basilosaurus isis was erected in 1904 (Andrews).

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“We are sorry to see the Basilosaurus retired. It was a fantastic figure of a Late Eocene prehistoric whale. PNSO have expanded their model range dramatically over recent years, model retirements are to be expected. PNSO will continue to add to their popular mid-size model range. We will announce a new PNSO figure in the very near future.”

A Superb Drawing of a Parasaurolophus Head

By |2024-03-09T15:55:09+00:00May 7th, 2023|Adobe CS5, Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal Drawings, Dinosaur Fans, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Our thanks to young artist Caldey who sent into Everything Dinosaur a superb drawing of the head of a Parasaurolophus. We were informed that Parasaurolophus is one of Caldey’s favourite dinosaurs. She enjoyed its brief appearance in the first “Jurassic Park” movie. It is a superb Parasaurolophus drawing.

Parasaurolophus Head Drawing

The young artist has given her Parasaurolophus an impressive head crest and the blue motif works exceptionally well. It is thought that these lambeosaurine hadrosaurs had colour vision. So, why not give the Parasaurolophus a colourful appearance. Caldey has taken great care to include details of the skin and the dinosaur’s skin texture. The beak has been drawn accurately. In addition, that is a very impressive and professional signature that has been incorporated into the drawing.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“Our thanks to Caldey for sending in her illustration. It is superb. Team members have had to prepare a script all about Parasaurolophus. The script was required for a series of short YouTube videos being created to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the film Jurassic Park.”

Parasaurolophus in “Jurassic Park”

Parasaurolophus may only have a relatively minor role in the 1993 film. However, its fleeting screen appearance sets the scene for what is to come in the rest of the film and vividly demonstrates how our perception of the Dinosauria has radically changed.

Thirty Years of “Jurassic Park”

By |2023-04-13T09:14:38+01:00March 25th, 2023|Adobe CS5, Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal Drawings, Dinosaur Fans, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

This year, marks the thirtieth anniversary of the release of the ground-breaking dinosaur movie “Jurassic Park”. The film was based on the 1990 novel by Michael Crichton. The film was extremely successful. It was a huge commercial success. It spawned a movie franchise with a further five films following, the original “Jurassic Park”.

The Legacy of “Jurassic Park”

Recently, Everything Dinosaur team members were interviewed about the impact of the film and the “Jurassic Park” legacy. The interview will form part of a seven-part, celebratory series being created for a YouTube channel.

The Impact on the Earth Sciences and Palaeontology

Many people working in the Earth sciences today, whether as palaeontologists or in some other related discipline were influenced by the movies. The Jurassic Park franchise is often cited as being a source of inspiration for them. The films and the book helped make up their mind as to their future career. They have watched the films, read the book and decided to become a palaeontologist.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“I do think it is fair to state that the book and these films have inspired and enthused new generations of scientists and academics. The Jurassic Park franchise has cemented the Dinosauria into popular culture and as a result, prehistoric animals are perhaps more popular than ever.”

The Everything Dinosaur spokesperson added:

“Jurassic Park may never exist, but maybe if the book or the films had never happened then perhaps what we term today as the golden age of palaeontology might not have come about.”

We look forwarded to viewing the YouTube videos when they are released later this year.

Happy Mother’s Day A Special Day

By |2024-01-02T16:09:35+00:00March 19th, 2023|Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal Drawings, Dinosaur Fans, Main Page|0 Comments

Today, it is Mothering Sunday here in the UK. The fourth Sunday in Lent following the Christian calendar, a day dedicated to celebrating motherhood. Mother’s Day is celebrated on different days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the Northern Hemisphere spring months of March through to May.

Maiasaura

As we consider mums, maternal bonds and the contribution of mothers to society, our thoughts turn to the ornithischian dinosaur Maiasaura. Named and described in 1979 (Horner and Makela), this hadrosaurid dinosaur (Maiasaura peeblesorum) is synonymous with motherhood and maternal behaviours.

Dinosaurs and spaceflight. Maiasaura fossils have been into space. Happy Mother's Day.
“Good Mother Lizard” Picture credit: Everything Dinosaur.

The first fossils of this dinosaur were discovered in the Badlands of Montana (USA), by a team of American scientists led by palaeontologist Jack Horner. The site the team uncovered consisted of a number of dinosaur nests, eggs, baby Maiasaura, juveniles and adults. The fossil site was renamed “Egg Mountain” and represents the fossilised remains of a Maiasaura colonial nesting area.

Happy Mother’s Day

Studies of Maiasaura provided unequivocal proof that dinosaurs raised their young and fed them at the nest (altricial behaviour). Maiasaura translates from the Greek meaning “Good Mother Lizard”, an appropriate epithet for a dinosaur that demonstrated that these reptiles, looked after their offspring.

The extensive fossil remains of this hadrosaur have enabled palaeontologists to undertake large scale studies of dinosaur ontogeny (growth rate studies). In addition, scientists have been able to determine the mortality rate of Maiasaura based on the Montana “Egg Mountain” fossils. A study of fifty Maiasaura peeblesorum tibia revealed that 90% of all Maiasaura hatchlings died within their first twelve months. If the dinosaurs survived into their second year, the mortality rate would fall to around 13%.

Maiasaura remains one of our favourite dinosaurs. Happy Mother’s Day from Everything Dinosaur.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur thanked Esmee for sending in her drawing and added:

“Whilst we can’t be certain what colour sauropod dinosaurs were, it is thought they had colour vision. So, why not be brightly coloured with oranges, reds and blues. After all, if you are going to be longer than a bus you might as well stand out in terms of your colouration too. Our thanks to Esmee for creating such colourful dinosaurs.”
