Papo Polacanthus Video Review (JurassicCollectables)

JurassicCollectables have produced another very informative video of a Papo, new for 2017, prehistoric animal figure.  This time, the armoured Polacanthus takes centre stage and in this brief video review (duration 4:08), dinosaur model fans have the opportunity to take a really good look at this model.

The Papo Polacanthus Dinosaur Model

Polacanthus is one of those iconic dinosaurs, an animal that would be well-known to most dinosaur enthusiasts, but there have not been too many replicas of this armoured dinosaur produced.  Not need to worry, as Papo have gone a long way to making amends by producing a beautifully detailed sculpt, a model that although very much characteristic of Papo’s modelling style, provides enough accurate anatomical detail to keep even the most ardent dinosaur fan happy.

The narrator takes viewers on a guided tour of the Papo Polacanthus.  Exquisite details are highlighted such as the careful sculpting and painting around the beak and comments are made about the lovely folds of skin down the legs and the great variation in the body scales and osteoderms that that model has.

 That Famous Sacral Shield

The dermal armour is very well described and JurassicCollectables chose a novel way of showing off that beautiful characteristic sacral shield – a thick, fused plate of armour over the hips.  Regular cast member “off-colour Alan” uses the Polacanthus sacral shield as a saddle, this is a first for Everything Dinosaur members, we had not considered the sacral shield as a saddle before!  Although, we would not recommend trying to ride a Polacanthus, these animals were certainly capable of carrying a person as indicated by their robust limb bones and wide hips, but in all likelihood, it would have been a very bumpy ride.  Some of our American palaeontologist chums refer to the sacral shield as “the buckler”, perhaps they have theorised about the potential to use these particular members of the Thyreophora as transport!

It’s great to see Papo making a model of Polacanthus, it is a very welcome addition to the Papo “Les Dinosaures” range and we look forward to seeing further video reviews from JurassicCollectables as more of the new for 2017 Papo models come into the JurassicCollectables spotlight.

JurassicCollectables Compares Acrocanthosaurus Models

By | May 14th, 2017|Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur videos, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products|0 Comments

Papo Acrocanthosaurus Compared to Rebor Acrocanthosaurus

Over the last couple of years, dinosaur fans and model collectors have had the opportunity to obtain a number of replicas of the enigmatic Cretaceous Theropod Acrocanthosaurus (A. atokensis).  As well as the Safari Ltd replacement for the extremely rare Carnegie Collectibles Acrocanthosaurus, CollectA added an Acrocanthosaurus model into their Deluxe 1:40 range.  In 2016, Rebor introduced their highly-acclaimed 1:35 scale replica “Hercules” and a few weeks ago Papo added Acrocanthosaurus to their “Les Dinosaures” series.

But how do these models compare?  That’s a question that those clever people at JurassicCollectables set out to answer in their latest video review.  In this video, the Rebor Acrocanthosaurus and the Papo Acrocanthosaurus are put side by side, viewers have the chance to compare and contrast these two models.

Giving Channel Subscribers Want They Want

This comparison video came about as several subscribers to JurassicCollectable’s YouTube channel had requested it.  We admire the way in which the team behind the video channel responded promptly to requests and in this short video, (duration just under two minutes), dinosaur fans get the chance to examine these two excellent replicas and compare and contrast them.

High-spined Lizard Models

Only a handful of body fossils of this large, meat-eating dinosaur have been found.  It’s phylogenetic relationship within the Theropoda is still debated and exactly over what time period Acrocanthosaurus roamed the United States is difficult to establish definitively.  Trackways from Texas have been ascribed to Acrocanthosaurus along with isolated teeth from as far away as Maryland in the eastern United States, even the exact size of this predator is controversial, although most estimates suggest a maximum length of around twelve metres.

As with all the videos from JurassicCollectables, the camerawork is excellent and the models are always in focus.  In this video, the viewer is given the opportunity to get a really close look at these two striking dinosaur models.

Same Dinosaur, Different Styles but Similar Poses

The narrator points out that the Papo model’s head is lower than the Rebor replica version, both companies have depicted Acrocanthosaurus in a different way.  However, there are similarities in the pose, particularly the position of the hind feet and the curve of the long tail.  This is best seen from overhead (see picture), in the JurassicCollectables video, care has been taken with shot selection to ensure that these differences and similarities can be highlighted.

An Overhead View (Dorsal View) of the Papo Acrocanthosaurus and the Rebor Acrocanthosaurus

Commenting on the similar poses of the two dinosaurs, a spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur stated:

“It is all to do with stability.  Although the Papo model has the added benefit of having its front claws resting on the ground to give support, when it comes to getting a large, bipedal figure to stand up it is important to get the balance point over the hips.  The neck is slightly curved and the tail has been give an “S” shape in both these figures, this helps to balance the model and allows the design team to make the hind feet more in proportion with the rest of the sculpt.”

Both figures have their merits and it is great to see another type of apex predator included in a model range, other than the usual T. rex and Allosaurus figures.

JurassicCollectables Reviews the Papo Ceratosaurus

By | May 9th, 2017|Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

A Papo Ceratosaurus Video Review

Those clever and talented people at JurassicCollectables have posted up another dinosaur model review onto their YouTube channel.  This time it is the stunning new for 2017 Papo Ceratosaurus in the spotlight.    The Papo Ceratosaurus is one of six new dinosaurs or repainted dinosaurs being added to the Papo range this year and it has attracted praise from many model forums and collecting communities, it is a fantastic model of the Late Jurassic predator.

Ceratosaurus Takes Centre Stage

In this video, which lasts a little over four minutes, the narrator takes the viewer on a guided tour of this excellent figure.  Starting with a detailed examination of the skull and that articulated lower jaw, the spokesperson for JurassicCollectables comments on the use of various washes to add detail and the careful choice of paints as well as highlighting how nicely sculpted the digits and claws are.  In a lot of the artwork that depicts Theropod dinosaurs of the Morrison Formation of the western United States, it is often the larger Allosaurus that is given centre stage, a case in point being the David Bonadonna artwork that accompanied our article (May 5th), on the new diplodocid Galeamopus pabsti.*

With the introduction of the Papo Ceratosaurus dinosaur model, Ceratosaurus is likely to gain in popularity, especially amongst dedicated collectors, who perhaps may not have heard a lot about this Late Jurassic Theropod.

Several Species within the Ceratosaurus Genus

A number of species have been assigned to the Ceratosaurus genus, including a species from Portugal and a tentative assignment after fossil material was discovered in Tanzania.  The large skull in proportion to the body size has been captured in this Papo replica and the JurassicCollectables video review provides plenty of scope for viewers to study this replica from a variety of angles.  Those bony ridges (extensions of the lacrimal bones), are shown in close-up view and the narrator takes care to discuss the paintwork associated with the dermal armour that runs down the back and the flanks.

Scale Comparisons with Other Papo Models

A feature of the video reviews from JurassicCollectables are the size comparisons undertaken using other well-known prehistoric animals.  Naturally, “off-colour Alan” is on hand to help out and in this video, the 2016 Papo Kaprosuchus along with a Papo Velociraptor figure are used to provide an indication of the size of the Ceratosaurus.  For good measure, the recently reviewed Papo Acrocanthosaurus dinosaur model is filmed next to the Papo Ceratosaurus.  It is great to see these highly collectable figures shown in this way.

The JurassicCollectables YouTube channel is jam-packed with hundreds of amazing and very informative dinosaur and prehistoric animal videos.  Everything Dinosaur recommends subscribing to this really well managed channel: Find JurassicCollectables on YouTube Here

Papo’s “Les Dinosaures” Model Range

Although, Papo has chosen not to create scale models, their range of prehistoric animal figures is increasingly rapidly.  In addition, to the models already introduced this year, Everything Dinosaur is expecting stocks of the new Dimorphodon, Cave Bear, Smilodon and the Cryolophosaurus dinosaur to arrive shortly.  In terms of Theropods (not including models of birds), Papo currently offers nearly a dozen Theropods and several variations of the most popular carnivorous dinosaurs such as Velociraptor and Tyrannosaurus rex.  There are plans to add yet more in the late autumn, (more about this nearer the time).  For the moment, we shall watch the JurassicCollectables Papo Ceratosaurus video review once more.

Papo Acrocanthosaurus Video Review

When the new for 2017 Papo prehistoric animal models were first announced, great excitement was generated around the introduction of a large Papo Acrocanthosaurus dinosaur model.  Dinosaur fans and model collectors who have been lucky enough to pick up this model already, have raved about its quality.  Now viewers of the very informative JurassicCollectables YouTube channel can see what all the fuss was about, as a video review of this dinosaur replica has been posted up by JurassicCollectables.

The Papo model range continues to go from strength to strength and the JurassicCollectables video shows the quality of the paintwork and attention to detail on this model.  In this short video, which is just a fraction under five minutes in length, the narrator talks us through the features that have made this particular Papo model a “must have”.

Praise for the Camera Work

The camera work should be praised as this video provides some excellent close-up views of this Acrocanthosaurus, including the superb detail that can be found on the interior of the mouth, which as the narrator comments, has been lovingly sculpted.  Even the side of the jaw shows attention to detail with scales carefully depicted.

In the video, the narrator comments on the excellent colour tones and skin texture seen in this Papo model.  The dynamic pose is discussed and this is compared to the Papo standing Tyrannosaurus rex replica, which also provides a good size comparison.  The wash on the feet and hands is noted, as is the care and attention to detail when it came to painting individual scales along the flanks.  As well as a regular appearance by “off-colour Alan”, an impression of size is given when the Papo Acrocanthosaurus is compared with the 2016 Papo Kaprosuchus prehistoric crocodile.  Just like the Papo Kaprosuchus, the Papo Acrocanthosaurus dinosaur model also has an articulated jaw.

The JurassicCollectables YouTube channel has amassed over 54,000 subscribers and is home to some 700 dinosaur and prehistoric animal inspired videos.

Acrocanthosaurus atokensis

Named and described in 1950, Acrocanthosaurus (A. atokensis) is regarded as one of the largest Theropod dinosaurs known from the Aptian and early Albian faunal stages of the Cretaceous.  Fossils of this huge meat-eater have been found in Oklahoma, Texas and Maryland (USA).  In addition, other fragmentary fossils and some trace fossils from other U.S. States have been assigned to this genus.

JurassicCollectables Schleich “First Giants” Dunkleosteus Review

JurassicCollectables Reviews the Schleich Dunkleosteus Model

Everything Dinosaur team members had the opportunity to examine the sculpt for the Schleich “First Giants” Dunkleosteus model and we commented at the time that we thought this would prove to be one of the most popular Schleich models to be introduced for quite a while.  This has certainly turned out to be the case and now JurassicCollectables has given model fans the chance to get a good look at this Placoderm in their latest video review.

Prehistoric Fish into the Spotlight

This heavily armoured fish from the Late Devonian with its distinctive plates is one of the best known of all the prehistoric animals outside of the Dinosauria amongst model collectors.  As a group the Placoderms (Class Placodermi), evolved in the Silurian and Dunkleosteus, is regarded by many as the first vertebrate super-predator in the fossil record.  A number of species have been named and described, in the video the narrator states a length of six metres for this formidable marine monster, however, the lack of postcranial fossils precludes accurate measurements or even an assessment of the body plan of this prehistoric fish, but we at Everything Dinosaur have seen plates, (some of which are more than five centimetres think), that indicate individuals may have reached lengths in excess of nine metres.

In the short, highly informative video, the remarkable dermal plates and jaws are seen in close-up view and the narrator comments on the silver finish that Schleich opted for and the battered, scratched and nicked appearance of the plates.  This is very much how the plates would have appeared if you had braved diving in the Late Devonian and been unfortunate to meet one of these fearsome creatures.

Comments on the Scale of the Scales

The JurassicCollectables video also pays close attention to the different types of scale depicted along the body.  The viewer is given the opportunity to compare and contrast the different sizes of scale depicted on this skilfully crafted replica.

SpinoDude Reviews Polacanthus

Papo Polacanthus Video Review

SpinoDude has produced a very informative review of the new for 2017 Papo Polacanthus dinosaur model.  Papo’s promotional images of this plant-eating dinosaur did not do it justice and SpinoDude addresses this by showcasing some of the exquisite details that can be found on this replica, one of six dinosaur figures (including two repaints), to be added to Papo’s “Les Dinosaures” range this year.

The Video Review of Polacanthus

Video Credit: SpinoDude Reviews

In this short, seven-minute video review, SpinoDude shows the model in close-up and highlights some of the features of this replica, such as the carefully painted eye and the subtle detailing around and inside the mouth.  One of the great things about SpinoDude dinosaur model reviews is that the narrator starts by providing some scientific information about the dinosaur in question.  For example, the sacral shield is commented upon and the video contains images of the sacral shield and pelvis elements collected from the Lower Cretaceous of Barnes High, (Isle of Wight), what are in fact, the pelvis fossils of the Polacanthus holotype (NHMUK R175).

The SpinoDude YouTube channel has nearly 1,000 subscribers and the channel contains dozens of skilfully made prehistoric animal model reviews.

 An Eagerly Anticipated Dinosaur Model

The narrator describes the Papo Polacanthus as one of the most eagerly anticipated figures to be introduced by Papo this year.  The spectacular Acrocanthosaurus and Papo Ceratosaurus may have stolen a lot of the limelight, but discerning collectors will appreciate the quality of this armoured dinosaur.  On our travels, we have had the pleasure of studying North American Cretaceous polacanthids as well as writing about the discovery of “the Horsham specimen” from Rudgwick, Surrey.  The disarticulated fossil material recovered from a brickworks quarry, representing strata deposited in the Early Cretaceous (Barremian faunal stage), has led to the establishment of a new member of the armoured dinosaurs, within the Polacanthinae clade but not that closely related to Polacanthus foxii.  This new dinosaur has been named Horshamosaurus. (H. rudgwickensis).

Schleich Herrerasaurus Dinosaur Model Reviewed

By | April 8th, 2017|Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

A Video Review of the Schleich Herrerasaurus Dinosaur Model

Those clever people at JurassicCollectables have produced another dinosaur model video review.  This time it is the Schleich “First Giants” Herrerasaurus that is in the spotlight.  This figure was introduced by Schleich in 2016 and Herrerasaurus has been in the news lately following the publication of a scientific paper that reclassifies the Dinosauria.  The paper, written by a number of eminent palaeontologists, including researchers from the Natural History Museum and Bristol University, puts the Herrerasauridae, the family to which Herrerasaurus belongs, outside of the Dinosauria.  Herrerasaurus may not have been a dinosaur after all.

In this short video (duration a little under five minutes), a Herrerasaurus dinosaur model is unwrapped and put on the display turntable.  The narrator discusses the model and highlights some of the features, including the quaint, retro, almost 1950’s feel of the model.

The Schleich Herrerasaurus Dinosaur Model Video Review

Video Credit: JurassicCollectables

The video review gives model collectors the opportunity to see this quite large dinosaur model up close.  The model may have a retro, almost “stop motion” feel to it, as pointed out by the narrator but there are still some lovely touches, such as the wet, glossy look to the inside of the nostrils and the careful paint job done on the eye and down the flanks.  The narrator summaries the Schleich “First Giants” Herrerasaurus succinctly when he says that “this is an early dinosaur that reminds you of an early toy dinosaur.”

The last model to be introduced this year, is the wonderful Papo Cryolophosaurus dinosaur figure.  The photograph shows a close-up view of this skilfully painted, meat-eating dinosaur.  The design team at Papo are to be congratulated for their clever and very creative colour schemes.  We have already nick-named this particular model “the Papo Elvis”, in honour of that unusual nasal crest that this dinosaur had, the function of which remains unknown, but it has been speculated that it had a role in visual display.

The narrator takes great care with the individual model descriptions.  Each one of the dinosaur models has been given its own unique paint job and the narrator describes all three in detail before demonstrating that the wire aperture that supports each model can be manipulated, allowing the necks and tails of these meat-eating dinosaurs to be posed in different positions.

Tenontosaurus Bite Marks Line Up

Rebor’s attention to detail is highlighted in the video review.  JurassicCollectables show how all the bases of the Deinonychus models fit into the Tenontosaurus model base and they point out that the bite marks on the unfortunate Tenontosaurus match up to the positions on the diorama now occupied by the Cerberus Clan.  Model collectors can opt for a range of poses and positions for their own diorama, making their display truly unique. When all three Rebor models are shown together the whole diorama looks spectacular.  Viewers can see the completed diorama in the last portion of the JurassicCollectables video review (very appropriate music accompanies this part of the video too).

All three of the Rebor models, Acrocanthosaurus, the Tenontosaurus corpse (T. tilletti) and the Deinonychus set are available from Everything Dinosaur, to view the entire range of Rebor collectables available from Everything Dinosaur: Rebor Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal Models
